LinkedIn is of course the channel to reach your business audience. Through LinkedIn advertising, you can target specific job titles, companies, and industries. But you can also reach a large audience on LinkedIn through organic content, especially if the algorithm works in your favor. In this blog, I give you 5 tips for more organic reach on LinkedIn.

What is the LinkedIn algorithm?

You may have noticed when scrolling through your LinkedIn timeline that you don't always see the most recent posts. The LinkedIn algorithm ensures that you see content that is relevant to you, content that you are likely to find interesting. Conversely, the LinkedIn algorithm also determines the quality and reach of the content you post. It's not entirely clear how the algorithm works, but it is tested daily by experts. Be sure to take these 5 tips into account when creating your next LinkedIn post:

  1. Ensure quality content. When you post content on LinkedIn, the algorithm determines the quality of your post and assigns it a label: Spam, low quality, or approved. Besides being important that your post falls into the approved category, it's also important to optimize your content and page. Post different types of content such as blogs, PDFs, images, and videos, and post your update before 10:00. Also, make sure your (company) page is complete.

  2. Ensure that someone is engaged with your post for as long and as much as possible. LinkedIn also looks at the average time your post is visible on a LinkedIn user's screen. On LinkedIn, long texts with 1,200-2,000 characters provide the best reach. But you can also ensure that your post is viewed longer with content, try posts where you use multiple images, add a PDF or a video.

The first two hours after posting are the most important for the algorithm. During this time, your post is first shown to a small group of your connections or page followers. The engagement of your test group determines the success and reach of your post. So make sure you interact with other users. You can also tag certain people or companies in the comments and respond quickly to comments under your post.

  1. Use hashtags. For the most reach, use 3 to 5 hashtags and place them directly in the text of your post. It's also possible to follow a hashtag so you don't miss important content or create your own unique hashtag and encourage your connections to follow it.

  2. It's important that you as a company or person are also active on LinkedIn to reach more people yourself and receive more engagement on your own posts. So regularly post comments and ensure many connections or followers. Longer comments have more impact on reach.

  3. Do you want to share a post from, for example, a company page? Then the reach is much lower than with a self-posted post. To reach as many people as possible, it is advisable to post a text yourself and use hashtags with the shared post. It has more impact on reach when employees post a comment than when they share a message. In general, you have more reach with posts placed via your personal profile than with a company profile.

Of course, it's important to test what works best in your industry and with your connections. Take these tips into account but be aware that the LinkedIn algorithm is constantly changing. Also, be sure to see which posts have performed well in recent months, which topics did your audience find interesting, and where did the most interaction come from? But also test with times and days when you post your posts.
