Data Engineer

Data Engineer

32-40 hours | Hybrid working

A pipeline that breaks in the middle of the night? You deliver the structural fix, not the workaround. A query that costs too much? You spot straight away where it goes wrong. At Follo, performance marketing leans entirely on data that is correct: every bid, every client report and every AI model we run depends on the pipelines that move data from all kinds of sources into our data warehouse.

We believe that is where the future is, so we keep building and will invest heavily in our data infrastructure over the coming years. For that we are looking for someone who knows how to set up data structures, monitor them and run them as cost-efficiently as possible. You build both the warehouses and the pipelines, and you make sure everything works flawlessly. You think in terms of architecture and choose solutions that will still stand in two years, even when the tooling around them changes. At the same time you understand that an agency has to move fast. That balance is what this role is about.

What you will do

  • You design, build and maintain ETL and ELT workflows that scale with the number of clients.
  • You orchestrate data flows through DAG platforms. We currently work with Windmill and are exploring a migration to a platform that fits our stability requirements better. You have a significant say in that.
  • You write maintainable Python and TypeScript for integrations and transformations.
  • You safeguard quality, uptime and reliability. When a pipeline breaks, you deliver the structural fix rather than a temporary workaround.
  • You use LLMs as a fixed transformation step in pipelines, for example to clean, categorise or enrich bulk data.
  • You keep a close eye on cost: you optimise heavy BigQuery queries, prevent unnecessary API calls and stay deliberate about token usage.

Our stack

BigQuery, Google Cloud Platform, Windmill, Python, TypeScript and PHP/Laravel for our main app, GitHub with CI/CD, and the APIs from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Gemini. For infrastructure management we use Terraform and Ansible, for monitoring and telemetry Sentry, Slack Applications, Grafana, Loki and InfluxDB. See a better alternative? We would like to hear it.

The team

You join a small engineering team of two engineers that will keep growing over the coming years. You report directly to the coordinator / team lead, so the line to decision-making is short and you never have to wait for someone else to pass on your idea.

Your profile

What you will bring

202503-Sfeer-Follo-Utrecht-708335

You have at least 2 to 3 years of experience with data engineering in production, and you think in terms of architecture rather than isolated tasks. On top of that:

What we really need

  • You write robust, production-ready code in Python and TypeScript.
  • You have demonstrably built and maintained ETL or ELT workflows that others relied on.
  • You are strong in SQL and BigQuery: complex queries, window functions and data modelling.
  • You have worked with at least one DAG platform, for example Windmill, Airflow, Dagster, Prefect, Inngest or Temporal.
  • You apply version control and CI/CD to data infrastructure.
  • You have 2 to 3 years of experience with Google Cloud Platform and can assess an existing environment, understand it in depth and rebuild it where needed.

Nice if you bring this along

  • A Google Cloud certification: at minimum Professional Data Engineer and preferably Professional Cloud Architect as well. For us this is not a box to tick: it shows you really master the platform, and it is essential for our Google Cloud Partnership status.
  • Experience with LLMs in automated data processes.
  • Experience with PHP or Laravel, for the integration with our main app.
  • Experience migrating between orchestration platforms.
  • An eye for FinOps and cloud costs.

Do you recognise yourself in most of this, but not all of it? Apply anyway.

Why Follo?

At Follo we stay ahead in a landscape that changes fast, and we actively help shape it. AI is not a buzzword here, it is part of how we work every day. Think MCP integrations, automated workflows and LLMs as a fixed step in our data processing.

  • You build the infrastructure the whole agency runs on: every bid and every report starts with your pipelines.
  • Real influence on architecture and tooling, including the migration of our orchestration platform.
  • AI is in our DNA: from FolloEngine to LLMs as a fixed step in production pipelines.
  • Strong brands and real challenges, in an agency with European ambitions.
